Selection Process
Parents, siblings, adult friends of the student, guardians, school principals, scholarship or other nomination/review committees may nominate a student but input from the student will be required. When nominating a student please ensure they meet the following criteria:
- The student has above-average grades but does not immediately come to mind for school staff as likely to attend university.
- The student may not be viewed as “university” material.
- The student is not winning other scholarships or financial awards for post-secondary study.
- The student must be able to submit their transcript and an essay. They will be contacted by the Community Foundation of Nova Scotia by email to submit their section.
A student who meets eligibility and selection criteria may self-nominate.
Award Value & Timeline
A minimum of $5,000 will be awarded annually. The award may increase to $10,000 in any year depending on the quality and number of applicants.
The recipient of the award in June of any year has until September three years following to begin university studies (e.g., a student awarded the scholarship in June 2026 has until September 2029 to begin university). This provides time for increased maturity and careful selection of program of study.
The number of scholarships and the amount of each scholarship will depend on the number of nominations received and the funding requested by nominees.
Scholarship payments will be made directly to the student’s account at the university and not to individuals.
