To help United Church parishioners in the Halifax area attend post-secondary
Dr. Earle Reid grew up in the small community of Steam Mill, Kings County. At the age of six, having lost his father due to a lack of prompt medical attention, his future was determined. Driven to become a doctor, he studied his way by lamp light before and after farm chores to a Governor General’s award for scholastic excellence, and graduated from Dalhousie University with a medical degree in 1957. Earle met the love of his life, Janet Dexter, while attending a youth dance at Bethany United. They married in that same church and spent 50 happy years together while remaining active in the church. It was their wish to support the United Church of Canada and its parishioners by establishing this scholarship fund.
