A bursary to support immigrants
or the children of immigrants
in their chosen field of study.
The New Canadian Education Award was established by Marta Mihoff and her husband Derek Broughton in honour of Marta’s grandfather, Leo Mihoff, who immigrated from Bulgaria around 1920. As a young man, he had been apprenticing as a tailor, but was pressed into two wars. At the first opportunity, he and his brothers left for Canada, where he worked for the rest of his life as a labourer. It was important to Leo that his eldest child, a daughter, go to university, and told her the only thing that cannot be taken from you is education.
This award is to help new immigrants or their children access training, education or accreditation for interrupted careers. Any type of career development will be considered, such as a professional trade, care-giver, university or college degree or diploma. The deadline for applications is April 30.
